Continuous Autofocus Mode on D800?
How can I set to continuous auto focus on the D800 without having to press the shutter button or AF-ON button?
I know on Liveview, it's AF-F and any of the tracking modes. The D800 continuously focuses.
Thanks.

I'm pretty sure you can't do that with any Nikon that I know.

Is it so difficult to press a button with your index finger or thumb to achieve continuous AF when shooting with OVF?

Re: Continuous Autofocus Mode on D800?
not only do you have to press the button, you have to press it again and again, even on af f the camera doesn't seem to keep focusing
I just changed bodies and lens system because my alpha a77 broke down and I couldn't get my local dealer to order a a99. Video for wildlife is a nightmare. The rest still photography, even live view, is very good.
I think, for video, I may have to find either a sony again or maybe the v1 + adapter

You are not being very clear here. Are you filming or taking pictures? If you are taking pictures, no you cannot get continuous AF without holding down the shutter, or AF-ON. If in video mode you can get AF-F without doing this but I recommend manual focus is the only way to go...
He's clear what he wants.
Because filming can't be done on a Nikon DSLR using the optical viewfinder.
Only what he wants is not possible. For so far I know some Nikon compacts/system camera's do have the ability (tracking faces) completely automatic.

Re: He's clear
now nikon does autofocus in liveview
I was trying inside for test purposes, with 50mm f1.8 nikkor 180 f2.8 nikkor and 150-500 os
but focus, whatever iso and aperture value, was , at best, erratic ( better with more depth of field )
However, I just tried that with the 150-500 outside
I selected af f, cl on the s/cl/ch ect ring ( af f normal selected on the left hand side af/ m centre button )
iso was 6400 1/1200 f6.3
I focused first on the fallen leaves on the grass, then on a bird on the feeding table, then on lower ceddar boughs then on the tree top
focus occurred of its own accord, I didn't have to press or hold any button ( shutter or af on )
af isn't even slow ( the 150-500 is reported being accurate in focus, not fast )
focus change was about 1-3 sec each time
so I am no longer contemplating buying a second body for video
I do enjoy af video for birds in flight. Precide dof control and other reasons may argue for manual being the way to go, but as an ex a77 user I know what fast video with continuous af is
while d800 is not that fast it is reasonably possible to follow large birds ( great egrets in the nearby ponds and marshes )
Hope to lighten up somebody's way and day with these comments !
